Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley
Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay discovered her love for art from her aunt Denise. She worked as an evening nurse in order to give her aunt to have the time she needed throughout her day time to enjoy the pleasures of art, literature, and theater. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay discovered through experience the art of being a good tool to engage in social activism. DuVernay developed a social aware by her mother. Although DuVernay grew up living in Compton with her family she was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. DuVernay's dad recalled the Civil Rights marches that occurred on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. DuVernay would use her summers in Alabama as inspiration for her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay developed an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to watch the home of one of the members of the jury, and then examine their junk. The duties she was required to accomplish left her unsatisfied and so, after deciding to not pursue journalism, she moved on into the industry of publicity. DuVernay was offered a job straight from college, working as a young publicist for a studio. In 1999, she founded her own firm that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency. The agency was the first to launch a variety of promotional and lifestyle networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye. Her name is associated with a well-known actress that has been in American Experience (1987), A More Perfect Union (2009), and other films. Autumn was the Rose in A More Perfect Union and Anna Payne of American Experience.
